Foredrag om The Troubles i Irland
Engelsk - AnnetForfatter:

In the late 1960s began periods of violence in Ireland that often has been called the Troubles.
The protestant police attacked Catholics during marches for civil rights.

(The allegations about discrimination against Catholics, and the Catholic community, Were the key driving force of the civil rights movement in Northern Ireland).

And as the troubles continued, there were sent troops from Britain, and militant groups from Northern Ireland to keep law and order.
The Catholics had a revolutionary way of fighting back, like: marches, bombing of Protestant areas and hunger strikes in prisons, many of these prisoners were sent to prison without a trial.

All this was to lead to 30 years of terror, killings bombings.

The consequences of the conflict

Total there were over 3,600 deaths as result of the conflict, most of which occurred in the early and mid 1970s. Civilians accounted for more than half of the fatalities. 91 per cent of the deaths were male. 53 per cent were under 30 years of age.
In the majority of these killings, no one was convicted.

Given the population of Northern Ireland (one and a half million) it has been estimated that the numbers of people closely associated to those who were killed or injured is about half of the population. It has been a huge price to pay for the people in Northern Ireland, and to resolve their differences peacefully will be hard both for the Catholics and the Protestants.
