“My Fair Lady”, released in 1964, is hailed as one of the greatest films ever made. The film is based on the story Pygmalion (1912) by George Bernard Shaw. The old play refers to the King of Cyprus who fell in love with a statue of that he made. Henry Higgins (Rex Harrison) is an English language Professor who accidentally meets this poor flower seller Eliza Doolittle (Audrey Hepburn) under his responsibility to change her accent from an unrefined flower girl with a Cockney accent to a genteel who speaks the majesty of the English. Higgins pushes Eliza day and night, while wondering why a woman can't be more like a man, so she can learn to speak properly. It’s all a bet that Higgins makes with his friend , Colonel Hugh Pickering (Wilfred Hyde-White), wherein Higgins claims he will be able to pass Eliza off as a Duchess in six months. As Eliza and Higgins train together, they become accustomed to each other even though it is a bet from Higgins' part. Finally the inevitable confrontation occurs, Eliza is passed the Higgins expectations, but Higgins still considers her a poor flower girl.

The movie reflects Shaw’s delicious irony and for this reason it succeeds. Both the dialogues and the songs are performed extremely welll. Eliza Dolittle’s transformation from a poor girl to a real lady is very convincing. Eliza's father Alfred P. Doolittle a poor alcoholic is played very good by Stanley Holloway has a lot of talent that would show to come in handy when he was to play Sherlock Holmes.

The director George Cukor does a very good job setting up the whole movie. The stage set could have been a lot better, but with thoughts to the fact that the movie is pretty old, this is more or less all right. It’s not like the movies you see today.

Higgins gets away all to easily considering the bad way he treats Eliza, it reflects the mentality of the time the movie was made. The movie gets a little boring after a while because it’s so long, the three hours might be too much. But after all it is a great movie and I would sure recommend it.
